The Herd is more than a name. It is the heart of who we are. HERD is rooted in Braydeston, a family farm that has been cared for by Guy's family for generations, shaped by a deep respect for the land and a belief in farming as stewardship rather than ownership.
Building on this legacy, Guy & Ali began with just six Hereford cows, reintroducing traditional mixed farming to the land. Over time, the herd purposefully grew - to between 40-60 cattle, reflecting how life at Braydeston evolved as Grace and Issy joined in, and the farm became a family home.
Our philosophy at Herd is best summarised as progressive: incorporating our knowledge of the land with expertise from a small team of experts to embrace the best scientific and technological knowledge available to us, whilst championing traditional agriculture and best practice learnt from generations of farming and the new exciting venture, winemaking.
Braydeston's gently rolling fields, open skies and free-draining soils provide ideal conditions for English wine. The vineyard sits within a working farm, shaped by generations of agricultural knowledge and an understanding of the land that comes from farming it year after year. This long-term relationship with the land influences every decision, from planting to harvest.
Our vines are carefully managed throughout the seasons, with a focus on balance, resilience and quality. From winter pruning through to harvest, each stage of the growing cycle is approached with attention and patience, allowing the vineyard to develop naturally over time with the help of a small and dedicated team along with a wonderful group of volunteers. The result is fruit that reflects both the season and the character of the land.
English wine is defined by freshness, precision and character. At Herd, we work with the natural environment along with the climatic each year brings, embodying the variability that makes English viticulture distinctive. Our aim is to produce still and sparkling wines that are elegant, expressive and true to Norfolk.
The vines are the starting point for every wine we make. By focusing on fruit quality and thoughtful vineyard management, we create the foundation for wines that are crafted with clarity and restraint - wines that speak quietly but confidently of where they come from.
